Snapper Rocks Dolphin Pool

Snapper Rocks is a prominent rocky outcrop located on the northern side of Point Danger at the southern end of Rainbow Bay in Coolangatta, Queensland. It is renowned for its spectacular coastal views and world-class surf breaks, forming part of the famous Superbank. This area attracts surfers, tourists, and nature enthusiasts year-round due to its stunning scenery and vibrant coastal environment.

The Dolphin Pool

The Dolphin Pool at Snapper Rocks has a unique historical significance. In 1956, Jack Evans built the Snapper Rocks Sea Baths, which included a special shark pool for public viewing. This innovative idea proved popular, and Evans later introduced bottlenose dolphins to the pool, creating what became known as the Jack Evans Porpoise Pool. This attraction was among the first of its kind in Australia, pioneering the display of dolphins in a public setting.

Historical and Cultural Significance

Jack Evans’ Porpoise Pool quickly became a major attraction on the Gold Coast, drawing visitors from far and wide to witness the dolphins' performances. The success of this venture contributed significantly to the local tourism industry and set a precedent for marine animal shows in Australia. Although the original porpoise pool was eventually moved to the mouth of the Tweed River in 1961, remnants of the site at Snapper Rocks still exist today, serving as a reminder of its historical importance.
